As the saying goes, “Health is Wealth” and there are so many healthy substances available today with different functions. They also exist in different forms. In this article, we will be considering two healthy oils; MCT oil and CBD oil. Both oils are of great benefits and most times people hear about these oils and don’t know the difference between them.
CBD oil and MCT oil both have medicinal benefits. Therefore, they have healthy effects on our body but CBD oil is majorly used with the aim of its therapeutic effects, MCT oil is used for its nutritional impact and as an enhancer for other healthy substances.
The difference between MCT oil and CBD oil is mainly from their source, uses, and benefits derived from them. CBD oil and MCT oil are from different sources. While CBD oil is a product from hemp plant extract, MCT oil can be produced from coconut oil and palm oil.
The name CBD was derived from Cannabidiol which is a phytocannabinoid that was discovered in 1940 while MCT is a shortened form for medium-chain triglycerides.
What You Should Know About CBD Oil?
CBD is one of the major chemical substances (or cannabinoids) extracted from Cannabis, Cannabis sativa. It is a known natural substance used as a cure for some common ailments. Even though CBD is from Cannabis, it does not have the psychoactive characteristics of Cannabis. The CBD oil is produced through the combination of extracted CBD from cannabis and hemp seed oil or coconut oil which acts as a carrier oil and also a diluent.
From as far as 2900 BC, marijuana has been used as one of the natural substances used to cure pain. CBD, as an extract from marijuana, has also be recorded to help in the treatment of chronic pain conditions. The action of CBD is in its ability to bind with the endocannabinoid which is a neurotransmitter in the Endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The Endocannabinoid system plays a major role in the regulation of sleep, pain, appetite and also in the response of the immune system. The nervous system experiences the physiological effects of the bond between Cannabinoid and Endocannabinoid receptors as it reduces pain and inflammation.
The effects of the combination which involves CBD and THC has been the target of many studies and it was discovered that the combination is effective in the reduction of the chronic pain that comes with Multiple Sclerosis and Arthritis.
Studies have shown that CBD oil has anti-depressant capabilities and can reduce anxiety. Depression is a popular mental health challenge especially in a challenging world like ours. The World Health Organisation opined that depression is the largest challenge responsible for disability all over the world and anxiety is ranked the sixth.
Most pharmaceutical drugs used in the treatment of anxiety and depression come with their various side effects such as drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and headache. Many researchers have built interest in Cannabinoid over the years and more studies are still ongoing on the benefits of Cannabinoid and its implications on the health of both humans and animals.
Cannabinoid had also been reported to be used for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety in kids suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. CBD also affects the activities of Serotonin, neurotransmitters that regulate the social behavior and mood of individuals by binding with brain receptors.
Further studies on Cannabinoid have shown the tendency for it to reduce the symptoms associated with cancer treatment like vomiting, nausea, pain and other chemotherapy-induced symptoms. CBD in combination with THC has shown to be more effective than most drugs used.
Some experimental tests have suggested that CBD has some anticancer characteristic but this claim is still under more investigations. The cannabinoid has also shown possible curative effects on Acne, a skin disease that is caused by factors such as, bacteria, overproduction of sebum secreted by the skin’s sebaceous glands, genetically related or underlying inflammation.
CBD oil’s action against Acne is because of its anti-inflammatory characteristics and its ability to cut down the production of excess sebum and prevent the activation of inflammatory cytokines which may cause Acne.
Due to the activity of CBD on the Endocannabinoid System(ECS) and the other signaling systems in the brain, some researcher believes that it may have neuroprotective features and be of help to people with neurological disorders.
Extensive research is ongoing on the effect of CBD on epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. The muscle spasticity in patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis has been reduced with the use of Sativex which is an oral spray consisting of CBD and THC.
Studies showed that the seizure suffered by children with Dravet syndrome has also been reduced considerably with CBD oil compared with the impact of placebo. Although, some side effects were observed with people such as fever, fatigue or convulsion.
Studies have also shown that when CBD was used to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease, there were significant improvements in their quality of life and they had better sleep. CBD oil also helps in the prevention of neurodegeneration related to Alzheimer’s disease.
What You Should Know About MCT Oil?
Medium-chain triglycerides oil is an easily absorbed saturated fatty acid. MCT oil is used as a supplement to meet nutritional and dietary needs. It also plays a major role in the metabolic processes.
MCT oil is used as a supplement for weight loss, especially on ketogenic diets because it serves as a good source of fat. As a shortcut keto source, they are sources of ketones when there is insufficient carbohydrate consumption.
MCT oil also serves as a source of ATP for brain cells since the brain cannot compromise fuel supply irrespective of the level of carb intake. MCT oil delivers energy instantaneously to the body once they are consumed and moves straight to the liver since they don’t need to be broken down.
Some researchers had also studied the role of MCT oil in boosting the performance of athletes by reducing the build-up of lactate during intense sporting activities.
Some side effects observed with the use of MCT oil especially in new users include diarrhea and nausea while those observed with CBD are diarrhea, lack of appetite, change in weight and possibly fatigue.
The good part is that both CBT oil and MCT oil can be used together with MCT oil acting as a carrier oil to help improve the function of CBD since it is easily absorbed into the body. Therefore the combination of both oils increases bioavailability and the fat-based MCT oil helps CBD oil last longer.
